We document. We mobilise. We act.

UNIS combines research, public information, citizen mobilisation, advocacy, recourse to the law and pan-African cooperation. Six ways of acting, one single logic: understanding in order to act.

How we act

From information to action

01 · Research & document

Establishing the facts before denouncing them

Analysis and research on the mechanisms of corruption, public finances and governance. We track corruption cases to preserve the facts and inform public debate.

Our publications

02 · Alert & inform

Informing with rigour and responsibility

We challenge institutions and inform the public. UNIS also defends an environment in which those who reveal matters of public interest can act without facing reprisals.

UNIS in the media

03 · Mobilise

Accountability belongs to citizens

Campaigns, meetings, workshops and public-awareness work. UNIS works with citizens, young people, the media and civil-society organisations to strengthen public participation.

Our campaign method

04 · Advocate

Recommendations, not findings alone

We put concrete recommendations to public authorities and oversight institutions, and argue for oversight bodies that are independent and effective.

Our seven measures on the cost of the institutions

05 · Act through the courts

Pushing impunity back

Where the legal conditions allow, UNIS joins proceedings as a civil party or supports legal action to help establish responsibility.

Strategic litigation

06 · Cooperate across Africa

Corruption crosses borders

We work with national and international partners to obtain concrete accountability measures, and build collaboration with those fighting corruption across the continent.

Our network

Our areas of commitment

Seven fields of work

Corruption and public finances

UNIS analyses the management of public resources, oversight mechanisms and the risks of misappropriation or poor governance.

Extractive industries and natural resources

Africa's natural resources should contribute to the development of its people. UNIS documents the risks in the mining and extractive sectors.

Financial crime and illicit flows

UNIS helps document the transnational mechanisms that move illicit funds through companies, banks and jurisdictions.

Accountability and institutional reform

We advocate for independent, effective oversight institutions and put forward concrete reform recommendations.

Citizen mobilisation

UNIS works with citizens, young people, the media and civil-society organisations to strengthen public participation.

Whistleblowers and access to information

UNIS defends an environment in which those who reveal matters of public interest can act without facing reprisals.
