Titled “Anti-corruption trials in the DRC: whitewashing or empty tombs?”, this issue puts the judicial response at the centre of its analysis.
The bulletin examines several cases: the purchase of a property in Brussels by a senior Congolese judge, suspected misappropriation of funds intended for vocational training centres, a case involving three judges in Haut-Lomami, the modernisation of Bipemba airport, the “attendance fees” linked to the negotiation of the Chinese contract, and developments in the boreholes and street-lighting case.
It also revisits civil society's demands concerning the USD 150 million linked to Glencore's conviction by the Swiss courts, and the possibility of those funds being returned for the benefit of the DRC.
Through this third edition, UNIS restates that fighting corruption must bring together public institutions, the courts, civil society, the media and citizens.
