UNIS launches KANYAKA-RUSHWA, its monitoring bulletin on corruption in the DRC

Kinshasa, 8 August 2024 — UNIS is launching the first issue of KANYAKA-RUSHWA, a bulletin intended to document, on a regular basis, corruption cases and related conduct in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Exceptionally, this first edition covers the first six months of 2024 and lays the foundations for sustained work of record-keeping and citizen monitoring.

The bulletin examines cases relating to public procurement, boreholes and street lighting, the national identity card, OGEFREM, the National Forest Fund, revenue from oil production at Moanda, FONER revenue and court revenue.

The aim goes beyond simply compiling cases. UNIS intends to build up, over time, a documented record of corruption that citizens, civil society, the media and institutions can use for advocacy, accountability and case tracking.

Editorial rule: KANYAKA-RUSHWA never turns an allegation, a suspicion or an accusation into an established fact. The bulletin consistently distinguishes between established facts, allegations, ongoing investigations, prosecutions and convictions.
